Leon Trotsky
Trotsky was born on 7 November 1879 in Yanovka and died on 21 August 1940 in Coyoacan. He was born to a Jewish Stalin, and during his school years he was introduced to Marxism. He was arrested and spent few years in jail, and later exiled to Siberia, he then escaped to London and joined the group of Russia Social-Democrats working with Lenin.
He was a communist theorist and agitator, he was a leader of Russia’s October Revolution. He was the commissar for foreign affairs under Lenin, but he resigned after disagreeing with Lenin’s thoughts. He became the red army leader and led to victory in the Russia Civil War. After Lenin’s death, he only had few allies to support him while Stalin has a lot of support from many people. He was exiled from the Soviet Union after losing in a power struggle against Stalin, and he was assassinated by Ramon Mercader under Stalin’s order.

Trotsky is related to Snowball as both of them are leaders that led the revolution against the old leader. He wasn’t doing these for himself but for the people’s benefits. The both were leaders of an army in the Russian Civil War and Battle of Cowshed. However, they had someone opposed them who was Stalin and Napoleon. Also, Trotsky and Snowball are similar because they both had a plan for their country and farm. Trotsky proposed the five years plan and Snowball proposed the plan to build a windmill. At the end, they had to left their country and farm because they don’t have the power anymore.
Orwell represents Trotsky this way because Snowball played the same role as Trotsky, trying to oppose Stalin and Napoleon. The readers can easily identify Snowball as Trotsky since what happened to them was quite similar, they both lost their leadership. Orwell used a pig to represent Trotsky as all the pigs are the leader in the novel. However, the characteristics of a pig compare to Trotsky’s doesn’t match at all. That might make the readers think that Trotsky is the same kind of person as Stalin who tried to benefits himself only while Trotsky was really trying to benefits other people.
