Propaganda
Propaganda is a form of communication that manipulates or influences other people’s opinion. It uses different kind of techniques such as emphasizing information that support themselves and exclude any information that do not to change the audiences’ thoughts. Propaganda is usually seen in politics, but it can also be seen in advertisements.
Propaganda was very effective in Soviet Union. It can change the people’s attitude, it was everywhere and efficient. The main censorship body was the Glavlit which employed 70,000 full-time staff to take away any unwanted materials and also to ensure that they put the correct information on every published items.
In the novel, squealer is closely links to propaganda as he is working for Napoleon to present the speeches to change the animals’ opinions. This symbolizes Stalin when he delivered the important message to other people. Squealer used different slogans and languages to confuse the animals in order to make Napoleon a great leader. At the same time, he told the animals that Snowball who represents Trotsky is an enemy. Stalin also used languages and he selected information that supports him in the newspaper to make him a great leader. Other than that, Squealer used the song “Beast of England”, and “Animal Farm” to reflect the principles of Animalism while “The Internationale” represents Marxism.
Orwell used the propaganda in the novel perfectly because Squealer, “Beast of England” represented what happened in the Soviet Union. The name “Squealer” is a good choice to represent propaganda as the readers can easily identify the characters immediately. It was successful to represent propaganda by Squealer as he made clear connections between the farm and Soviet, telling the readers that propaganda is dangerous.
